Baby Sign Language…how Important Is It…?

May 6, 2009

How important is baby sign language? Is it hard to teach to your baby? What age should you start at? My daughter is 5 months old is it to early? Is baby sign language really helpful in your every day life with your baby?

I wouldn't say that signing is 'important', because it really doesn't matter if you don't do it at all. It's just a tool that can make your life a bit easier.

It's really not hard to teach. You just need to memorise a few signs & get used to signing them every time you use the corresponding word. Your child will pick them up as easily as they do spoken language (although usually much earlier than they start speaking).

5 months is a terrific time to start. We started at around 4 months with my son. Be aware that they probably won't sign back until about 8-12 months, though.

My son is only 6 months, so I can't comment on our own experience, but from what I've seen with friends' children, signing is extremely helpful. The best thing, I think, is that it helps children stop becoming frustrated, as they can communicate their needs before they're physically able to talk.

Have fun with it!
