The key to baby signing is to always say the word you are signing. That way the baby hears it as well as sees it. The theory of baby sign is that they can move their little arms and sign before they can produce the actual words. So, if you do it correctly, it does not delay language.
Baby sign is not a "teaching" tool like teaching children to read. You do it to help your baby communicate with you which is supposed to lead to less frustration on the baby's part (because they can't yet talk to you in words).
