How Do I Say the Word “the” in Sign Language?

April 27, 2009

I have a friend of mine who is hearing impaired and is an excellent guy who has done alot for me lately. When I first told him thank you, i did it on a piece of paper with a pen and also wrote "You the man" on the paper too. This time when I go over and tell him thank you (which I learned), I would also like to be able to say "you the man". I've learned the word "you" and "man" but cant find the word "the" anywhere. Is there a sign for the word "the" or maybe a phrase in sign language that means the same or means that phrase exactly?

you would have to fingerspell the word THE, but in asl, (american sign language) there is no sign for the word THE because it just isn't used. ASL grammar rules are not the same as english rules. Certain words are just eliminated because they are unnecessary to them. They are basically just understood. like if i looked right at you and said "sit down!!" i didn't use the word you, so this is not a complete sentence right.? Wrong, it is a complete sentence because the word "you" is implied or understood to be there since i'm making eye contact. same rule applies to sign language kinda. If it's understood, they don't use it.! (is are was were am be and been are all examples of words not used in sign)
