I have a research paper saved on a little mini cruzer jump drive. It will now not open on any of my computers at home. I am getting extremely frustrated, so if you have any suggestions please feel free. Whenever I try to open it up, it comes up in another language with symbols and signs as my with. Please let me know what to do.

You are likely not using the same software at home as you have at school. You might have WordPerfect at school and MS Word at home.
If this is the case, you might be able to fix it by downloading OpenOffice. They are compatible with most versions of WP and Word.
