Our 16 month old son never ceases to surprise us with how fast he learns things.
He uttered his first word at 8M and had a vocabulary of 40 words by his first birthday besides knowing the sign language as well.
At 10M,he knew the names of every toy he had and would touch the right one when asked.
He knew his alphabets( cap letters only) and numbers 1-10 by 15M and would be reading them out aloud when he saw them on car name plates, t-shirts
or in the supermarket aisles.
At 16M, he now knows over 400 words, can say numbers until 20 and knows the names of 30 birds & animals, 10 insects,20 fruits& veggies, all his body parts,
can differentiate between vehicles ( car, truck, firetruck, ambulance, tractor etc),>15 cartoon characters, can fill in the blanks when i sing nursery rhymes ( knows nearly 15 of them
and will even request me to sing a particular one by saying the right words and can execute 2 step instructions.
As of last week, he has begun uttering 2-word sentences as well.
His pediatrician thinks his vocabulary is "stellar" but has not made any mention of whether he is gifted and said -"continue to read and sing to him".
After observing a handful of similar aged kids and reading about developmental milestones, we do understand that our son is way ahead
on the verbal ability front.
But, is he gifted or just smart for his age?
And what should I do next?
I am a stay at home mom and my child does not go to a montessori school yet. I buy him books that he may like every now and then and when he is done
with those books I get him more.
I do not know if there is any systematic approach I need to take to teaching him and how I could nurture his abilities.
Are there any special institutions/people that I need to go to as well that can help identify gifted children?
Thanks in advance for your time and answers !

A great resource for gifted information. He sounds very advanced and could quite possibly be gifted!
His Dr probably won’t mention "gifted" as he is still VERY young.
Also check out the PBS Development tracker:

Great resource and detailed development information.
And as for "doing" anything, just read to him, take him on walks, read to him, play with him, do whatever you would normally do! Did I mention read to him!!??
Everything conceivable will be scrupulously done to insure that your kid follows your steps. Mother’s who've experience at this could bear witness to the simple fact, that many mums make the damaging mistake of neglecting themselves to take care of their kid. Yes, your youngster will place a giant burden on you but God won't place a burden on you bigger than you have strength to bear.
