I've decided it's time to learn the basics of sign language so I can communicate better with my 3 yr old nephew.
The thing is, I need the easiest way possible. I do not live with someone with whom I can practice. Maybe there is a picture book or video program?

a website i used in high school for my asl class was extremely helpful when i wasn't sure how to sign something. It is aslpro.com. try there. they have a video dictionary, and a few different sections sign groups (religous signs and i think there was one on baby signs but i am not sure) it was helpful to me. give it a try and see what you think.
I would image that cavern ladies and men starting the old ball a-rolling.
