We use sign language with both of our children (currently ages 6 and 11) and will use it with our baby due in two weeks. Our 11 year old is autistic and we've found that it gives him a creative outlet to communicate when he's frustrated since he now uses his hands to speak rather than trying to strike out with them. The youngest signed her first sign at 5 months old! Talk about making the baby years and communication easier!
We use strictly American Sign Language (ASL) since it's a universally accepted form of sign and therefore it doesn't create much confusion as some of the programs out there which encourage you to make up your own signs.
A great program to check out is Sign-2-Me (same website address). Not only can you purchase the program but they offer classes in several areas.
