When did you start signing and when did your baby make his/her first sign?

It was very early, soon after we started. All I did was make the sign for Milk or Cookie every time I said the word. If I said Milk three times in a conversation, I made sure I did the sign every time. I didn't ask him/her to do it back to me though.

Over time, very soon afterwards, they would do the sign. It's a survival skill in communication and where they can't talk, they know that by mimicing that hand movement, it's a communication.

We used sign for basic words they need. Milk, eat, juice, mommy, daddy, play, happy, wet… I can't remember them all (they're 6 and 9 now). It was a FANTASTIC alternative to whining, which is what kids will do if they can't communicate.
