Sign Language for 1 Year Olds?

April 20, 2009

We have a niece who is teaching her 1 year old to communicate with words and sign language, so that using sign he can communicate better with her. He is learning the sign along with the spoken word. I think it's great, but she gets upset when someone talks baby-talk to him while playing with him because she thinks it confuses what she's teaching him. I think it would be nice if she spent time teaching the rest of us what he knows already so we don't jeopardize what she's trying to accomplish. What are your thoughts on teaching a baby this way?

Teaching a baby sign language is becoming quite popular. My daughter is teaching my granddaughter signing and at 11 months she can tell us when she's hungry or tired.
Her verbal language development is way ahead of most 11 month babies. Her daddy is Spanish speaking so she's learning Spanish too.
Children learn language much easier than adults do, especially if it's before age 5. Children who are bilingual tend to do better in certain subjects like math and music once they start school. Their brains are literally wired differently if they have learned more than one language.
I doubt "baby talk" will really be a problem unless that's the only spoken language she gets.
