It is useful and easier to communicate with your baby by the time they reach 9 – 12 months. My son is 14 months and knows 15 words in sign language and it makes life easier to take care of him. We did it by exposing him to a dvd for 25-30 minutes a day since he was 1 1/2 month called Baby Babble. Find it you will love it www.talkingchild.com.
I know they are not the real sign language, but they are perfect for developing the communication with your kids.
By the way I am recommending to sit your kid in front of the tv to be taken care of. I don't do that except for 30 minutes a day for him to continue learning more of the dvd, but I do spend 2 hours after I get home from work, playing and reinforcing the sign language with him.

I think sign language is a great thing to do with your children. However, from what I saw on that Web site, this is *not* what the video teaches. But rather, it seems to teach arbitrary made-up signs. It is no harder to teach a child *real* signs than made up ones, and then they have the basis of a real language instead of just some odd gestures.
Furthermore, babies learn best from *people*, not from TV. It is the parents who should be teaching this. If you're interested, buy a DVD for parents instead of this. Or get the information free from the Web. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies under age 2 should watch *no* TV *ever*. (See sources section below.)
