There may be different answers to this question. It depends if you are a freelance or community interpreter or an educational interpreter. I have worked in both fields. Currently I work in K-12 setting. I like my job because it is steady and I know how much I will make every week. i also get holidays off and summer and spring break. Since I work in an educational setting I do more than interpret sign language. I work as an aide in the classroom and help the teacher with day-to-day activities.

Other things that are helpful is to just have a broad background. When you interpret it is very helpful to have an understanding of a lot of subjects and different areas. It is hard to interpret a concept that you do not understand.

Sure you US citizens and Brits can communicate with one another but there are subtleties between the 2 cultures mirrored in their various languages. Learning American sign language can open up a new sector of communication with individuals that can’t hear correctly, but take it slow to get a course that will prove its ‘ worth before you pay out, and will be offering your cash back if they do not come thru, it’s worth the effort!
