Is a class worth it? And who would teach it best? Is it possible to do on-line? Are there texts that are standards? Is it possible to learn for free somewhere?

I think it depends on your reason for learning sign language. You may find some cheap classes offered through you community. A lot of community colleges may offer sign language. If you happen to live near a school for the deaf you probably could get classes there. Also if you live in a large city check for Community Services for the Deaf. Usually large cities have non-profit organizations that will offer classes to the public.
