What Is the History of Sign Language?

October 19, 2011

Question:

I have to write this speech on the importance of sign language through out time. Do anyone know any good websites that might help?

1)History of sign language
2)types of sign language
3) The importance of this form of communication in our society

Answer:

Well, I don't know any good websites, but there is a great book that isn't very long or hard to read. It's called Laurent Clerc, the early years or something like that. Laurent Clerc is the father of American Sign language. He was a frenchman that was deaf. The book is about his experience at a deaf school. Although it took place in France, many of the events still take place today. There is a sign language for most spoken languages around the world. And the importance of the language…it is officially considered a language…and a foreign language at most colleges.
Some other people of importance are Thomas Gallaudet, Helen Keller, William Stokoe, Marlee Matlin (spelling may be incorrect). Just to name a few.
