I found out from a history text that the Arawaks who greeted Columbus on Guanahani (which he renamed San Salvador) were able to communicate with him.Since the text said the Arawaks came from South America and most countries there are Spanish speaking,I concluded they spoke Spanish, even if it was a dialect. How could they tell him about the Caribs and the wounds/marks on their body? How could they tell him about the wealth on neighbouring islands? I find it strange to think that all of this communication was by sign language.A Social studies teacher said they did not speak Spanish. What do you think or know?

I think you are a bit mixed up.
The Arawaks did not speak Spanish.
The South American countries were colonized after Columbus discovered America first than the rest of the area was colonized by the Spanish.
When Columbus and the Arawaks met, the probably spoke by sign language.
