Whats a Good Age to Start Teachng a Baby Sign Language?

July 10, 2009

I want to teach my daughter how to sign, I know they usually aren't able to sign until about 8 months+, but to any who have taught their babies what age did u start?

My daughter is 2 months now, which i know is way too young to make a difference now, but I could start getting myself in the habit im sure.
any books you recommend?
Nope American, but im sure it will work just the same :) Thanks!
My son had delayed speech, i found out when he was 2 that he couldnt hear well, he had tubes put in and now he is almost 6 and starting to have alot of trouble hearing again. I wish i would of learned it alot sooner, and in im sure it will come in plenty of handy if gosh forbid he loses his hearing even more. And I read that it actually encourages earlier speech, you just have to make sure you are saying the word when you sign. I also read children who learn sign have a higher IQ amongst children who cant sign.

It’s never too early to sign. All my boys have signed before 6 months.

Go to your local Deaf Association and get them to give you *real* sign language books. I never taught mine *baby sign language* only the one they will be able to use the rest of their lives.
They actually are able to give you the books, leaflets, everything you need for nothing or a small donation.

I have to say to the person who commented that it stunted their friends child’s speech, were they correctly using it?
We have no choice but to use it, as one of our Child was born with hearing problems, and his hearing is pretty blah. But talking to him when we signed, and his brothers, none have been *that behind in speech*.
