When Using Sign Language?

June 6, 2009

Do you sign every word, if not how do know WHICH to do?
I teach a class of 2-3 year olds and am trying to teach them a simple song for our Christmas program. Most already sign a little so I thought we may be able to sign this one too.

It goes to Mary Had A Little Lamb

Mary had a baby boy, baby boy, baby boy
Mary had a baby boy and his name was Jesus.

Joseph loved that baby boy, baby boy baby boy
Joseph loved that baby boy and his name was Jesus.

Shepherds came to see him there, see him there, see him there
Shepherds came to see him there and his name was Jesus.

Which words should be signed? What would you use for Mary and Joseph?

Incoming search terms:

ASL (American sign language) is a whole language unto itself, but has many similarities to English for practical reasons. When teaching sign to young children it is fine using signed English (signing every word in the order you would use if you were speaking), but it is not necessary to sign every one, just the most important. As for sign names for Mary and Joseph, look up online for biblical signs in ASL they may already have official sign names (I’m not particularly religious). Because the song is repetitive you should only need a handful of signs:-)
