I am currently a freshman in college and interested in becoming a teacher, especially for the deaf. I really want to take advantage of the summer vacation by doing something that will contribute towards my future, so I am interested in taking an intensive ASL (American Sign Language) class.
However, I haven't had much experience with kids and I have never had a job so I am also thinking of applying at a day camp.
Which one do you think would be most beneficial: learning a new language or building my leadership skills/resume (lol)? I think both are good for gaining experience, so that's why I'm stuck in a rut ![]()

Summer classes only last part of the summer (from what I've seen) – several weeks. I say take your summer course – and look for work anywhere that involves children. Maybe a day care that can hire you to work later in the day. You can always try to volunteer at museums/get a job over the summer. There are MANY children centered activities at ALL museums. It will build experience that is sought out by schools.
I'd say do both, but I know typical summer courses are M-F several hours a day. I'd choose to continue your schooling – get it out of the way. You can always work part time somewhere or volunteer a day or two during the week. So goodluck in your choice.
